Communication and Cooperative Labor in the Separate System

"Eastern State Penitentiary: Heterotopic Testimony and Materialist Mutualisms," a series of drawings by Meg Studer.

Based on archival research into the working life of Pennsylvania's Eastern State Penitentiary in the nineteenth century, these pieces show how an institution notorious for solitary confinement may in reality have been the scene of unexpected kinds of contact and collaboration. The material life of the institution, it seems, was at odds with the theory of solitary discipline.
